New Delhi: The Union home ministry on Tuesday downgraded the security cover of some major politicians including those of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav – former chief ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, respectively.

The home ministry scaled down the security cover of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, serving time in the Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi for his role in the fodder scam. A person familiar with the developments said Yadav’s cover was downgraded keeping in mind the fact that he was serving a prison sentence.

The Centre also withdrew the Z+ security cover given to Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, taking away the “black cat” commandos guarding him.

The decision was taken after a comprehensive review of the VIP protectees, provided security by the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

When contacted, the Samajwadi Party declined comment on the matter.

The ministry has also revised the security cover of Uttar Pradesh minister Suresh Rana, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Member of Parliament (MP) Rajiv Pratap Rudy, striking their names off from the Central list of protectees.

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP Chirag Paswan’s security cover has also been scaled down to the “Y” category.
